Ever hear the story about the “smart pills”?
It seems that a young fellow was concerned about his intelligence, and mentioned that to an acquaintance. The acquaintance told him that wasn’t a problem–that he just needed some “smart pills.” Of course the young fellow was interested, and asked his friend to obtain some for him. The young fellow was able to scrape together the money, which he gave to his friend for the pills.
Later that day, the friend gave him a small bag of small, brown spherical objects. He said “Here are your smart pills.” The young fellow said “those look just like bunny poop.” His friend responded with “Those are really smart pills. Open the bag.”
The young fellow opened the bag. He then said “Those smell like bunny poop!” His friend countered with “I guarantee you that you will be smarter if you take them. Go ahead–try one and you will see.”
At that point the young fellow popped one in his mouth and began to chew it. An alarmed look came over his face, he quickly spit it out, and exclaimed “Those ARE bunny poop! You tricked me!”
To this his friend replied “See, they worked. You are smarter already.”
I told you that story partially to give you an idea why the U.S. FDA is involved in the food, drug and supplement claims business. This is particularly relevant in that actual “drugs” are always, in some manner, destructive. On condition that they weren’t, they’d not be classified as drugs. The word drug ultimately began with the Greek word “pharmakon,” meaning “poison.” The reason that all drugs come under the regulation of government agencies is because they all are poisons of some variety and strength.
